Your Path to Hope, Recovery, and the Blueprint for a Life Filled with Happiness and Purpose!

About the author - written by Allie Bloyd - Friend, mentor, lifelong cheerleader.

When I was 18 years old, I returned home for the summer after my freshman year of college, and was looking for a summer job. I had heard from a girl at school that she had served at Cracker Barrel for a few years and did pretty well, so I decided to apply. That’s when I met Phylecia.

I was instantly drawn to her energy and enthusiasm. She always had a smile on her face and we very quickly hit it off. Everyone loved her. We were always laughing, singing, and dancing in the kitchen, spending our lunch break in my car while pulling 12 hours double shifts. We talked about everything under the sun and felt a unique connection from the beginning.

We had some mutual friends and began to spend time together outside of work, seeing each other more regularly as the months went by. Then, something changed.

We had all gathered at Phylecias apartment one night to hang out, and something was off. We all felt it. She was talking a mile a minute, and while that wasn’t completely abnormal for her, this was different. She was not acting like herself, and we all left early, confused and concerned.

I decided to go back to her apartment the next day to check on her, and when I did, I only grew more worried. I learned the next day that she was admitted to a psychiatric facility, and shortly after, found out that she was diagnosed with bi-polar disorder. What we had witnessed was full blown mania.

It was a very hard time for me, and everyone who knew and loved her. After she was released, we weren't sure what to expect. Would this be the same girl that we knew and loved, or would she be different? Would she still wanna hang out with us? Would she remember anything that happened? We didn’t know, but we did know that we wanted to be there for her.

We still hung out, and I did my best to support her, But things were different for a while. After I left Cracker Barrel, we saw each other less, but continued to stay in touch over the years

I got married and started a family and still considered her to be one of my closest friends, though we saw much less of each other. Then, a few years down the road, we had plans to hang out one night, but she backed out. She felt like I was doing so much more with my life than she was, and that it made her feel bad about herself. I was incredibly hurt and saddened, but I understood. I prayed for so long that she would see herself as the person I saw her to be. Someone smart, beautiful and strong - an overcomer.

After that, we fell out of touch for a while, until one day, She reached out. I had started a business and it was doing well, and she wanted advice about work, finances and life in general. We continued to talk, and she shared her hopes and dreams, which I fully encouraged her to pursue.

One day when we were talking about her job, how unfulfilled she felt at work, and how she wanted to make more money, I told her that I thought she would be a perfect fit for sales, despite her long-time resistance to the field.

I was in a position where I needed to hire a new closer for my sales team and told her that if she was willing to go in on this and give it a try, I knew she wouldn’t regret it. This would give her the ability to look behind the scenes of the thriving coaching business, get coaching from me on her business aspirations, and give her the ability to find fulfillment and financial stability in her work for the first time.

It was a big leap of faith for her to leave her job and come on board, but she did it with the desire to learn, grow, and thrive. And that’s exactly what she did. Over the next year, she dedicated herself to learning the art of sales and pursuing her business dreams. It completely changed her life.

I’ve seen her grow personally and professionally in such incredible ways over the last several years. Now, I am so thankful to see her fulfill this lifelong dream of writing a book; sharing her unique voice and experiences to give hope to others. I know that she will change the lives of those with bipolar disorder, and beyond, in the same way that she has changed her own.

Here are some common questions about

Be Happy or Get the F* Out:

What is bipolar disorder?

Bipolar disorder, formerly called manic depression, is a mental health condition that causes extreme mood swings that include emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression)

What are the types of bipolar disorder?

There are two main types of Bipolar - Bipolar I and Bipolar II.

Bipolar I is defined by having a week-long manic episode that could result in hospitalization, followed by clinical depression.

Bipolar II may not be as dramatic as the person can suffer from hypomania and depression (frequent highs and lows) though depression is more prevalent.

Bipolar I is easier to diagnose as it is very obvious to doctors to see but harder to treat. Bipolar II is harder to diagnose as it’s not as obvious and can often be misdiagnosed as just depression or adhd but easier to treat.

What causes bipolar disorder?

Bipolar can come down to two main componenets, genetics and a physical imbalance in the brain. The causes are not yet known as to why this happens but there is a chemical imbalance that is off in the brain that can lead to bipolar disorder. This can be hereditary, it is very common for someone who is Bipolar to have a relative with mental illness.

How is bipolar disorder diagnosed?

Usually after a family member, friend or even the person understands that there is something wrong - could be major depressive episodes followed by highs or vice versa. Some people struggle more on the manic side which is then followed by depression. Sometimes the person would go to the hospital or psychiatrist, then be diagnosed.

What are the treatment options?

Finding the right doctors, medications, psychotherapy options, and lifestyle changes. Solutions to Bipolar are multipronged. Lifestyle, sleep, exercise, healthy eating, ensuring we are not ‘self medicating’ through illegal drugs and alcohol which only makes things worse. We also want to find holistic approaches such as different types of supplements that can help our brain functionality and energy levels along with medications. Treatment and finding the right balance may take years - but it is SO worth it.

How can I manage my symptoms effectively?

Ultimately this isn’t the right question but comes up all the time - managing symptoms isn’t the question - it’s how do I come down from mania or get out of depression effectively. This could mean things like asking yourself the right questions - what keeps me calm and level? What brings me joy? Who can I help? How can I distract myself?

Can bipolar disorder be cured?

Not necessarily, it’s not something we just ‘grow out of’ or are suddenly cured. But this diagnosis can absolutely be controlled with the right strategies, tactics, daily tracking, and self care. Individuals with history severe depression, and manic episodes can go on to live wonderful, productive lives. It just takes work.

How does bipolar disorder affect daily life?

Your daily life, career and relationships can be affected if we do not take our diagnosis and treatment plan seriously.

What lifestyle changes can help with bipolar disorder?

Again, our lifestyle must be important to our diagnosis. We must focus on what can compliment our medical treatment plans - sleep, exercise, healthy eating, understanding when we need to be alone, and when we need support. Finding your own support system and knowing when to support and help others. Sometimes the best thing to do is go help someone else to take our mind away from what our problem is. Distraction and Action.

How can I support a loved one with bipolar disorder?

You can support them by understanding Bipolar and mood swings yourself but at the end of the day, the Bipolar person needs to understand that they need to do the above, you cannot do it for them. My parents were my support system, but I had to do the work.
